Art History for Chapter 3:
The Chosen People: Hebrews and Jews, from 2000 B.C. to A.D. 135
The Hebrews, another of the founding people’s of Western Civilization, did not develop much of an artistic culture. The sacred prohibition against graven images in the 10 Commandments is largely to blame. Their lack of much original painting, sculpture, and architecture therefore meant that they had little artistic influence on other cultures.
Their sacred scriptures, however, which became the Old Testament of the Bible for the Christians, would later provide an incredibly rich fountain of artistic subjects for Western Art.
